Goodbye Seizures + A Very Hidden Agenda

This weekend was pretty crazy. First off was Ross and Julia's leaving party. Rockschool got pretty packed mostly with people that Ross and Julia didn't know. But it ended up being a gong show. With an open bar and a long line-up of great bands, it was a night to try to remember.

Moy returned from his long ass holiday in the Philippines with Oi Squad! Which I missed most of since they played last and I was too far gone.

LiveFastDie played a killer set. Mike Jack has become a full fledged member of the crew and I tell you it works well!

After they finished their set the 5-0 showed up and put a bit of a downer on the night. According to my friend Tiff, they cleared an entire table of underage kids.

There were a few solo acts -

Joey from Milkteeth played some tunes.

DP played a fantastic set. Always a powerfest!

DBK (David Bowie Knives) were on sexfire! This was one of the best sets I've seen them play and I had heaps of fun.

The next day I staggered over to Hidden Agenda. This was quite fun.. It is one of the most difficult venues to find. There is about a hundred streets in the area that have the word "yip" in them. I asked my buddy Nic what it meant he says something like industrial. Having said it was a hassle to find, it is a really awesome venue!

The last band (which were nothing short of boring and bland) were from Beijing. We didn't stay to watch their entire 'performance'.

They did have one redeeming factor... the use of a melodica.

HANDSOME FURS

What an incredibly amazing night. I had such a blast. We opened for the Handsome Furs. First off we did pretty good I must say, I mean for how young we are (band wise). THEN, Handsome Furs blew me away!! They just totally fucking rocked the house! Hanging out with them after was awesome. They are two of the nicest people I've met. Very genuine. They really love Hong Kong and were super stoked to play a show and gave us lots of compliments. We partied for a few hours with them. I got to chat with Dan about his other band Wolf Parade (one of my favorites) and a bunch of other shit that I'm sure he gets bored talking about but he was really awesome and still showed interest. Then they went back to their hotel because Dan felt ill from the food poisoning he got the previous night.

Dan gave me a CD and they signed the shit!

Alexei from the Handsome Furs gave me a kiss ON THE LIPS!!

There isn’t a couple in indie rock that exudes more musical passion and sexual energy than Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry - and their’s is a refreshingly uplifting love story of boy meets girl. Dan, whilst performing with his other band (as frontman of indie heroes Wolf Parade) locked eyes with a bewitching girl in the audience during a gig in Vancouver, Canada. That girl was short-story writer Alexei and by the end of the night, the two were kissing by the merch-table. Awww.

Planning a romantic vacation around Scandinavia, they had a flash of inspiration: why not make sweet music together, form a band and make a tour out of it? And so it was, that the fruit of their labour, Handsome Furs (named after one of Perry’s short stories) was born.

The thing is, the shows turned out to be a great success, and earned them rave reviews everywhere they performed. The couple recorded some songs upon their return home and the buzz around the duo went into overdrive. In no time, they were snapped up by the legendary Sub Pop label - home to the likes of Nirvana, CSS, The Postal Service and Foals amongst others.

Mixed by Arlen Thompson (Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire) their debut LP Plague Park (inspired by their first Scandinavian tour) was released in 2007 to much critical acclaim, and 2009’s follow up Face Control (inspired by an extended Eastern Europe tour) has seen the couple cement themselves as purveyors of essential dance rock.

These are songs about contemporary life’s weighty issues. Themes of lust, love and mournful heartbreak paint the picture of the common man at the bottom of the 21st century – part desperate romantic, part enemy of the state. Struck by the perseverance and resilience of the residents of the places they visited, especially in Russia, the group manage to create thumping synth-powered anthems which make emotional pain sound heroic.

Musically, they’re fast and upbeat. Think a seductive mix of Beck-esque vocals, skuzzy guitars and pulsing beats - creating a plague of gritty, sweaty danceable rock. Their sonic heritage can be referenced from the likes of the Velvet Underground, Joy Division and Suicide, though the Handsome Furs’ unique live delivery is what sets them apart from all others.

One step closer to finishing off my sleeve! Had 6 hrs of work done yesterday at Star Crossed. It went well besides the fact that it hurt like a bitch, It was a struggle, but it's almost done. Very tender today.

Born From Pain

....is the band I went to go see last night...

Was a pretty fun show, best I've ever seen Live Fast Die play and King Ly Chee were pretty sweet! Pretty sweet night, had quite a few drinks from good ol' 711.

We will be playing open mic tomorrow at The Wanch... then play again the next night for a proper show! Exciting since these will be our first shows.

King Ly Chee is a Hong Kong based hardcore band that has been around for about 13 years.

LAST NIGHT WAS SUPER FUN TIMES!!!

Tim Holehouse was so fantastic! He was a Tom Waits-esque singer/songwriter from the UK.

Really great blues/folk stuff! We did not fill up Rockschool, but the people that did come were just a bunch of solid people. Check him out because his music should be enjoyed by everyone...

Haha, I bought one of his records on vinyl and he signed it "your band rock" - not so good at the english.

He gave a shower of compliments to our band, one of them being "you can quote me on this, you guys are rum-soaked folk!"

Gotta clean the Holehouse

So I've just spent the last little while making an event on facebook for a show we are playing on sunday (pretty last minute, but it's gonna be dope!) -Check it out here. So besides an extremely busy ass weekend, we must practice, practice, practice!! The show will be at Rockschool and will be headlined by Ross' friend Tim Holehouse. please come if you can! So, other than that, I had an interview with a primary school waaaaay out in Tsing Yi. Fingers way mega effing crossed! Seemed like a sweet school!

Other than that I am excited about my girlfriend coming here in less than a week! super awesome. Speaking of which, she has a friend David Farrier who is a TV interviewer of pretty much the coolest people anyone would ever get to meet. Just scoped out this video of him...

Anyways Also been really getting into True Blood, never thought I would because I think Vampires are for homos, but this is a pretty wicked show! I do indeed recommend!

Pirates of the City Towers

Been a few days since a little blog...

I been busy lately with band practices and poke battles.... Couple days ago I went over to greg's once more and played pokemon for hours.... I won almost every time. He keeps threatening me by saying that he wont play pokemon with me anymore every time i do something mean....

anyhow after the tough times of the poke battles we went to practice at the studio till just after midnight. We went to the IFC roof after that and stayed up having drinks till about 4 shootin' the shit.

Next day was hangover/run through the songs day. Ridiculous! then went to Rockschool after for a sound check... people showed up super late but in the end it was a great turnout..

Great show with some top notch performances... fun fun! By the time we went on it was around 1 ish. We were pretty drunk but we had a blast and Corey and Mike Kam are super fun guys to have in the band! Anyways went great here are some pictures..

So after the show Corey and a few of us decided to celebrate further and ended up at Galaxy until 5 am....

Needless to say I need some sleep. Two nights in a row... getting to old for this shit. hah, well had an awesome weekend!
